Medieval ManuscriptsItem Info
Language: Latin
Folio Number: 1r
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Initial M
Notes: This initial begins the introit for the mass of Saint Andrew (Nov. 30), "Mihi autem nimis honorati sunt amici tui, Deus. . ." (Great reverence have I for thy friends, O God. . .). The Historiated initial depicts the Saint, whose attribute is an X-shaped cross because, like his brother Peter, he was martyred by crucifixion.
The similarities in the style of the flourished and pen work initials of Lewis E 221, 222, 223, 226, 229, and 233 suggest they all were made in the same scriptorium, which, according to the colophon at the end of Lewis 221 and 222, was in the monastery of Belém in Portugal.
