Notes: This initial begins the Introit for the feast of St. Jerome (Sept. 30), "Gaudeamus omnes in Domino . . . (Rejoice we all in the Lord, . . . ). The size and ornament of the initial honors Jerome, who was the patron saint of the monastery where the manuscript was made.

The similarities in the style of the flourished and pen work initials of Lewis E 221, 222, 223, 226, 229, and 233 suggest they all were made in the same scriptorium, which, according to the colophon at the end of Lewis 221 and 222, was in the monastery of Belém in Portugal.
