Item Info

Item No: mcai210251
Additional Title: Choir book
Language: Latin
Folio Number: front 21:25
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Initial I
Notes: This initial is one of twenty-five taken from a large illuminated choir book or set of choir books typical of the type found in Italy during this time (see, for example, Lewis E 10). Consistencies in certain physical features, such as the same vertical dimensions used in the musical staves on the reverses, similar decorative motifs, and the same script, allow these cuttings to be identified as a group.

In this cutting, a large, red "I" was painted over the initial "E" that the illuminator originally intended. The red pigment is close to the ink used in the rubrics of the reverses of initials in this group. The "I" may have been added to correct a mistake made by the illuminator.
