Item Info

Item No: mca1840152
Additional Title: Psalter
Script: Gothic bookhand
Language: Latin
Folio Number: f. 15v
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Initial E, beginning Psalm 101
Notes: This initial begins Psalm 101, "Domine exaudi orationem meam et clamor meus ad te veniat ?" (Hear, O Lord, my prayer: and let my cry come to thee). The Book of Psalms was one of the most often produced books of the Bible during the Middle Ages. The Psalms were used to teach children Latin and, consequently, they were well-known and served as common prayers for private devotion.

This Psalter is a fragment, containing only Psalms 75-77, 80-95, 98, and 99-101. The rest of the pages were probably removed by a modern book seller who could get more money for selling leaves with illuminated initials individually than he could receive for the whole book.
