Notes:
For weeks reports emanated from Philadelphia that money and machine politics were playing a substantial role in the campaign, as wealthy families supported various competing candidates for governor and senator.... Senators...appointed a special committee chaired by James A. Reed (Democrat-MO) to investigate campaign expenditures and evidence of corruption in the recent primary and in the forthcoming November general election.... [T]he committee unanimously reported to the Senate on February 22, 1929, that, in light of the evidence of fraud and corruption, William Vare was not entitled to his seat.
