Notes: This leaf is from a set of thirty-one leaves that were cut from a single manuscript that once comprised a complete Bible.

This page begins the prologue to the Gospel of Matthew. The historiated initial depicts the Evangelist Matthew under the first arch of the letter M. A second figure appears under the second arch. This may represent Jerome, who translated the bible into Latin in the fourth century and who was the author of the prologue shown here.
