The subject of this beautiful studio portrait is Spanish-born composer and cellist Josep Valls y Royo (1904-1999). It was taken ca. 1925 (and signed on the lower right), by famed Parisian photographer Henri Manuel, who was the official photographer of the French government from 1914 to 1944.  The photograph is part of a collection of images at the Free Library, relating to the Musical Fund Hall, a noted Philadelphia music auditorium, lecture hall, and event site in the 19th century.  The written dedication refers to the Edward Garrett McCollin Memorial of the Musical Fund Society, but the date, closing, and location are difficult to discern.
