Notes:

From "The Redemption of the Lower Schuylkill: The river as it was, the river as it is, the river as it should be" (1924), p. 149

Caption reads:  "The banks of the Schuylkill, south from Walnut Street. The railroads coud be left where they are, the embankments being constructed oer them. Railroads run under the embankments of the Seine and of the Thames."

The basis for this book was a 1924 lecture by its author, local philanthropist John Frederick Lewis, about the deplorable state of the once-beautiful Lower Schuylkill River.  This image shows "the river as it is," with the railroads and heavy industry ruining the quality of the river and living conditions just below the Fairmount Dam.
