Aus liebe und zum andencken,
Nimm dieses Buch zum bedencken;
Nach dessen rath und anweisung.-
Als ein geschenck und eigenthum,
Hat dein großmutter Anna Nolt,
Es dir vererbt, darum du sollt
Recht ernstlich Gottes unterricht
Selbst drinnen lernen als ein pflicht,-
Christus darinnen dich selbst lehrt,
Himmlische dingen und bekehrt,
In Ihm ist dein Seligkeit:-
die wünsch ich dir schon in der zeit.

Translation:

Anna Herschey’s Testament. East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, April 27th A. D. 1830.
Out of love and to remember, take this book to ponder its advice and direction, as a present and property your grandmother Anna Nolt has left it to you, so that you may earnestly learn God’s lesson in it, as a duty. Christ himself teaches you in it heavenly things and converts. In him is your blessedness. This I wish you now in time. To the glory of God alone.

Hand-drawn; hand-colored; hand-lettered. The text in Fraktur and German and Roman script extends across two pages. On the left is the name in particularly prominent letters, from which project several small floral sprays, as well as the date and place. On the right is an acrostic on the owner’s name, Anna Herschey. The bookplate is in Das Neue Testament (Carlisle, PA: Moser und Peters, 1825).  (PA GER Carlisle 1825 B471)
