Family Class: All About Bees and Honey
Culinary Literacy Center at Parkway Central Library
Get busy as bees: learn about these important pollinators and taste honey from the library's hives. For kids ages 7-12 and their caregivers.
Did you know that the Free Library of Philadelphia's Parkway Central Library is home to approximately 240,000 honey bees? Our hives just produced their first honey harvest, and we are welcoming families to enjoy the sweetness of it all! Caregivers and children ages 7 to 12 are invited to taste samples as we learn more about the honey bees and the important roles they play in our environment from the library's beekeeper Don Shump. Each child will receive a complementary copy of The Thing About Bees, a children's book by Shabbazz Larkin (2019). The book's publisher, Readers to Eaters, will also have staff on hand to tell the story behind the book and share additional opportunities to engage in food literacy.
Pre-registration is required; tickets are $14 per person via Eventbrite. SNAP eligible participants are provided with a free ticket, with advance communication. Please call the Culinary Literacy Center at (215) 686-5323 to receive one of these reserved tickets, no questions asked. For more information, email kitchen@freelibrary.org
