Notes: This miniature begins Matins of the Hours of the Virgin. The Annunciation, which represents the moment in which Mary was told she would bear the Christ Child, was commonly used as the image to begin this Hour, which was read early in the morning, upon waking. According to Luke 1:28, the Angel Gabriel greeted Mary with the words "Ave Maria gratia plena dominus tecum," which translates to "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee." His words, which begin the prayer "Ave Maria," were meant to be read before beginning the Hours of the Virgin each day, but because every medieval Christian memorized this prayer in childhood, it was almost never included in manuscripts.
