This historiated initial begins the chapter reading for the first Sunday in Advent: "Ecce dies venium dicit Dominus et suscitabo David germen iustum: et regnabit rex et sapiens erit et faciet iudicium et in terra." (Behold the days come, saith the Lord, and I will raise up to David a just branch: and a king shall reign, and shall be wise, and shall execute judgement and justice in the earth.)

Notes:

This initial was removed from a fifteenth-century Italian liturgical manuscript and pasted into the present book. It was attributed to the Florentine artist, Gherardo di Giovanni del Fora (1445-97), by Mirella d'Ancona.
