Medieval ManuscriptsItem Info
Item No: mca1980021
Additional Title: Aeneid
Script:
Humanistic
Language: Latin
Folio Number: f. 2r
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Initial A with Aeneas
Notes: This initial begins Virgil's epic poem, the Aeneid, which tells of the legendary founding of Rome by the Trojan hero Aeneas. At the bottom of the page, angels carry a coat of arms. The original heraldic emblem has been erased and a sketch of a device has been drawn in ink. The ink matches that of the ex libris on the previous page and so may be the coat of arms of Antonio Caboge of Ragusa, who owned the book in the eighteenth century.
