Notes: This initial begins Virgil's Eclogues, or Bucolics, a collection of ten poems that take place in a pastoral setting, in which herdsmen converse and sing. In his fourth eclogue, Virgil described a golden age precipitated by the birth of a boy. Virgil was referring here to Augustus, who was the emperor at the time he wrote the poem (ca. 30 BC). Later Christians, however, chose to read the passage as a prophecy of Christ's birth.
