Twentieth December 1855
My Dear Locock.
Coming to town from Paris (where we are passing the winter), I found your note and the enclosure. It is always so pleasant to me to have any sight of you, that your hand-writing is the next best thing I know. The letter of Mrs. Gamp is wonderfully ridiculous—but upon my soul I don’t know a Judge on the Bench who could sum up the facts about an illegitimate child, more concisely. “Gentlemen, frail nature, an unguarded moment, a fallen servant, and the elapse of nine months; — you will probably not deem it necessary to retire” —
Verdict. Born by the visitation—&c.
Very faithfully Yours
CHARLES DICKENS
