Item Info

Item No: mca0920691
Additional Title: Book of Hours, use of Paris
Script: Bastarda
Language: Latin
Folio Number: f. 69r
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: David before Christ
Notes: This miniature begins the Penitential Psalms and conflates two scenes commonly used to illustrate these prayers: David in prayer and the Last Judgment. Usually in scenes showing David praying, the king addresses God, but here the divinity is shown with iconography associated with Last Judgment scenes, such as the rainbow on which he sits, the orb on which his feet rest, and his hand gestures. He blesses with his right hand and damns with his left. Scenes of the Last Judgment usually include the blessed and the damned rising from their graves, yet here the artist included only the figure of David.
