Notes: This image of the Virgin and Child begins a French prayer called the Fifteen Joys of the Virgin. The prayer enumerates, in chronological order, the joys Mary experienced as the mother of Christ, beginning with the Annunciation, when Mary learned that she would bear the Christ Child, and ending with her assumption into heaven. The image of the Virgin and Child was a common scene used to begin this prayer, although it does not specifically illustrate any of the joys described in the prayer.
