Notes: Flight into Egypt
Notes: This image of the Flight into Egypt begins Sext of the Hours of the Virgin. This is unusual as the Adoration of the Magi typically opens Sext, and the Flight into Egypt introduces Vespers.

In the miniature, a golden statue is about to topple off a column in the background behind Joseph. This imagery refers to the apocryphal legend of the Fall of the Idols. According to the legend, while on their way to Egypt, the Holy Family stopped at a pagan temple. As they entered, all of the idols fell to the ground and shattered, causing mass conversions to Christianity.
