Additional Title: Book of Hours, use of Paris
Script: Gothic bookhand
Language: Latin
Folio Number: ff. 117v-118r

Notes: St. John the Baptist and the Martyrdom of St. John the Evangelist
Notes: These miniatures begin the Suffrages to St. John the Baptist, on the left, and St. John the Evangelist, on the right. The Evangelist is simply shown holding his attribute, a chalice, and the martyr's palm branch. The scene on the left is much more dramatic, depicting the martyrdom of John the Baptist. According to accounts in the Gospels, John was imprisoned by King Herod and then was beheaded after Salome had asked the besotted king for the prophet's head.
