The African American Children's Book Project (AACBP) has supported the literary needs of the nation since 1992. The AACBP collaborates with authors, illustrators, publishers, booksellers, educators, librarians, consumers, and corporate entities committed to promoting literacy. At AACBP we know that early access and choice in books play an important role in building lifelong readers.

The organization has brought over a million books into the homes of children in the region. At the height of the pandemic many parents called the African American Children's Book Fair "a lifesaver" for their children who turned to home libraries, curated over the years from attending the book fair to get a reprieve from electronics.

Joyful Readers is committed to helping Philadelphia students gain the literacy skills they need to become successful, confident, and yes...joyful readers! In the 2022-23 school year, the organization recruited and trained a racially and generationally diverse cohort of 24 AmeriCorps members, who serve as high-impact reading tutors in 9 Philadelphia elementary schools. Tutors at Joyful Readers receive a month of training, including graduate coursework in the science of reading before starting their school placement, where they tutor 11 pairs of students for 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week. The organization is planning to expand to a cohort of 40 AmeriCorps tutors in the 2023-24 school year.

We began by offering individualized structured literacy tutoring services on a sliding scale basis. Families with struggling readers need significant funds to engage private structured literacy instructors; an option that is often cost-prohibitive.
