Notes: This manuscript was made for the wealthy English merchant John Browne and his wife Agnes. These exquisite miniatures and gilded borders and initials seen in this opening give some indication of the opulence that fills the leaves of this manuscript. The miniatures mark the beginning of Matins of the Hours of the Virgin. The pairing of scenes from Christ's Passion and his Infancy to illustrate the Hours of the Virgin was not uncommon in books of hours, but it further demonstrates the Brownes' desire to increase the luxuriousness of their treasured book.
