Notes: These initials mark the beginning of various prayers to the physical torments and wounds of Christ passion, including his head that received the crown of thorns, his right hand, his left hand, and the side wound. The last prayer is illustrated by an abstract representation of heart surrounded by four bleeding wounds.
This manuscript was made in Flanders for the wealthy English merchant John Browne and his wife Agnes. These exquisite initials and gilded borders in this opening give some indication of the opulence that fills the leaves of this manuscript.
