Additional Title: Book of Hours, use of Rouen
Script: Bastarda

Notes: This binding is a beautiful example of an original medieval decorated binding. Although difficult to see in photographic reproduction, the blind-tooled decoration on the front cover depicts St. Romanus, the patron saint of Rouen, the place where the book was made. He is shown treading on a dragon, a reference to a legend in which the saint saved the city from the dragon known as "Gargouille". The back cover shows Christ surrounded by the instruments of the Passion. The only part of the binding that is not original is the spine, which was repaired in the nineteenth-century.
