Notes: Job on the dungheap visited by his three friends
Notes: This opening shows the beginning of Vespers of the Office of the Dead, a series of prayers recited as a way to lessen the time in Purgatory for deceased friends and relatives. Depictions of Job's sufferings were typical to illustrate these prayers both because the nine lessons of the Office of the Dead are all taken from the Book of Job and because Job was a spiritual model of patience who was able to withstand arduous trials, from the loss of his family to beatings by the Devil.
