Notes: This opening contains the Suffrages to Sts. Anne and Mary Magdalene. The cult of St. Anne, the Virgin Mary's mother, became especially popular in the late Middle Ages. St. Anne is often depicted, as she is here, teaching the young Mary how to read. Mary Magdalene was another popular late medieval saint. Her attribute is the jar filled with the ointment she used to anoint Christ's body before burial.
