Notes: Funeral
Notes: This miniature opens the Office of the Dead, which was included at the end of nearly every book of hours. These prayers were recited in order to lessen the time that deceased friends and relatives had to spend in Purgatory. The miniature represents priests reciting the Office over a funeral bier in the presence of two black-cloaked mourners.
The miniature was painted by a member of the Gold Scrolls Group. The "Gold Scrolls" style was prevalent in Bruges during the first half of the fifteenth century. Although not seen in this miniature, its characteristic feature is the stylized design of gold vines against a single-color background. The two unidentified coats of arms on the altar-cloth probably refer to the original owner or owners of the manuscript.
