Title: Oedipi et Sphingis dialogus (Dialogues between Oedipus and the Sphinx)
Script: cursive
Language: Latin and Greek
Folio Number: p. 3
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Oedipus and the Sphinx
Notes: The text of this manuscript is organized as a series of dialogs between Oedipus and the Sphinx, in which the Sphinx poses riddles to which Oedipus must provide answers. This page beings the text of the book and portrays the two interlocutors. The story of Oedipus and the Sphinx was a Greek myth. Although the Sphinx appears as the composite creature of myth (part woman, part eagle, and part lion), Oedipus is shown in the costume worn in the sixteenth century by Ottomans, who occupied Greece from the fourteenth century until 1821.
