Notes: The text of this manuscript is organized as a series of dialogs between Oedipus and the Sphinx, in which the Sphinx poses riddles to which Oedipus must provide answers. The images that accompany the dialogs are in the form of emblems. Emblem books were very popular during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and contained surreal combinations of subjects that encouraged the viewer to contemplate moral issues. The accompanying texts offered interpretations for the strange representations.
