Notes: This page begins the account of Brutus, a descendant of Aeneas and epic founder of Britain, in the legendary and historical chronicle of England named after its first hero. First written in Anglo-Norman near the end of the thirteenth century, the Brut Chronicle was translated into Middle English around 1400. Filled with tales celebrating the deeds of heroic kings and knights, it became one of the most popular texts in England during the late Middle Ages.
