Notes: This page marks the end of the legendary and historical chronicle of England named after its first hero, Brutus, a descendent of Aeneas and the epic founder of Britain. First written in Anglo-Norman near the end of the thirteenth century, the Brut Chronicle was translated into Middle English around 1400. Filled with tales celebrating the deeds of heroic kings and knights, it became one of the most popular texts in England during the late Middle Ages. The text ends here with the death of Edward III in 1377.

The notes beside and below the main text were added by an early owner, Lionel Tollemache, the 4th Earl of Dysart. His signature and a note stating that the book was in the library of Helmingham Hall, the ancestral home of the Tollemache family, appear below the text. The manuscript remained at Helmingham Hall until the collection was sold in the 1960s.
