Notes:
This 16 page chapbook was published by John Babcock and Son,; and S. and W.R. Babcock in 1821. Chapbooks were small booklets that were cheap and affordable, and thereby popular from the 17th-19th centuries. Because they are flimsy and were handled by children, few chapbooks survive. They were mostly read by the poor, and children of the middle class.
The chapbook tells the biblical story of Joseph being sold by into slavery in Egypt by his brothers. The chapbook was meant to be both entertaining and didatic. It connects the theme of slavey in the biblical story of Joseph to American slavery in the 19th century, and includes vocabulary definitions for children.
