Examples of metal sorts or types. These metal letters representing letters and symbols were used when typesetting was done by hand by arranging letters and punctuation symbols to form words and sentences into lines of type called forms which would later be printed. After metal types were used they were reset and used again.

Metalic movable type was invented in the West by Johannes Gutenberg circa1450, but was preceded in the East by Koreans who were printing texts with metalic moveable type as early as the 13th century.
