Notes: Medieval calendars were often illustrated with the labors of the month and the zodiac signs. In this opening, the artist has painted four scenes depicting the different labors assigned to each month: wine-making for September, sowing wheat fields for October, slaughtering a pig for November, and baking bread for December. The zodiac signs for each month are painted within the miniatures in blue roundels.
