Notes: This miniature begins Compline of the Hours of the Virgin. It was painted by a follower of John Pichore, an illuminator active in Paris at the beginning of the sixteenth century. The landscape vignette in the lower margin, in which a bird catches a moth in its beak, reflects the rising interest in naturalism among Renaissance artists.
