Notes: Opening showing the personifications of Ecclesia and Synagoga (or Church and Synagogue)
Notes: This opening occurs within the Hours of the Holy Spirit. Here, Ecclesia (on the left) and Synagoga (on the right) are placed in opposition to each other. Ecclesia, with her upright crown, chalice, and straight staff, is shown in contrast to a blindfolded Synagoga whose crown barely clings to the back of her head as she grasps the Tablets of the Old Law and a broken staff. This iconography illustrates to some degree the theological position that the Catholic Church took in regard to the legacy of Judaism in the Middle Ages.
