Medieval ManuscriptsItem Info
Item No: mca1130092
Additional Title: Book of Hours, use of Rome
Language:
Latin
Folio Number: f. 9v
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Temptation of Adam and Eve
Notes: These miniatures tell the story of the fall of humanity from paradise. The original facing folio, now missing, contained the beginning of the Hours of the Virgin, which was traditionally illustrated with an Annunciation scene, the point in Christian history that signaled humanity's redemption. In the left border, the serpent's head is replaced with the head of a seductive woman. This iconography reflects certain misogynistic tendencies prevalent in medieval society.
