Prefatory Notes

The photographs of maps, prints, engravings and of photographs, and of houses, landscapes, churches, personalities and miscellaneous objects contained in the three volumes entitled "Pictorial History of the Falls of Schuylkill and Environment" during the course of several years were taken under my immediate supervision-- many of them by Dr. Alfred Reginald Allen and Mr. Philip B. Wallace of Philadelphia, The neighborhood whose story is largely told in these illustrations was one of which I had both a comprehensive and particular knowledge. I was born at the Falls of Schuylkill where I past my boyhood and youth and I always took a deep interest in the history of this village and the surrounding country. These have been so greatly changed by the expansion of the city as to be scarecely recognizable as they were forty or more years ago. It is the hope of the compiler that these volumes may be of some interest and value to future local historians.
