Additional Title: Book of Hours
Script: Rotunda
Language: Latin
Folio Number: f. 31r

Notes: The Annunciation
Notes: This miniature begins Matins of the Hours of the Virgin. The Annunciation represents the moment when the Virgin conceived the Christ Child through the words spoken by the angel. In the border around the main scene are images from the life of the Virgin, beginning in the bottom left-hand corner with the embrace of her parents, Joachim and Anna, at the Golden Gate, which was the moment when Mary was conceived. The scenes in the right-hand border, from bottom to top, show Mary's birth, her presentation in the temple, and her marriage to Joseph. The image in the upper left-hand corner depicts Joachim in the wilderness with his sheep receiving the news of the Virgin's birth from an angel. Representations of events from the life of the Virgin were meant to emphasize how her life paralleled that of her son. Miniatures in this book of hours represent Christ's conception (here in the scene of the Annunciation), his birth, his presentation in the temple, and the annunciation of his nativity to the shepherds.
