Notes: Item 1, top left: Illustration of the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company's office, located at 3rd & Dock Streets. The first building in Philadelphia to be constructed of cast-iron, the Penn Building - as it became known - was built in 1850-51. Demolished in 1956. Published in the Stranger's Guide in Philadelphia and its Environs. Philadelphia: Lindsay & Blakiston, 1854, p.66. Wood engraving, with caption. 8.9 x 12 cm.
Notes: Item 2, top right: Advertisement for the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, whose offices were located on the northeast corner of Third & Walnut Streets. Notes: Item 4, middle right: Fire mark for the "Mutual Assurance Company for the Insuring of Houses from Loss by Fire". Organized in 1784, the company accepted coverage from citizens who wished to have trees in front of their houses, a hitherto unacceptable fire risk. The company adopted the symbol of the "Green Tree" as its fire mark. Clipped from an unidentified publication. 9.5 x 10.6 cm.
