Item pdcc00056, full page [image dimensions 15.5 cm x 24.5 cm]:

Image shows the temporary wooden trestle bridge spanning the Schuylkill River at Market Street. It was quickly built as a temporary replacement for the Market Street Bridge which burnt down in 1875. This temporary bridge was torn down in 1881 to make way for the building of an iron cantilever bridge completed in 1888.

The cartoon-like illustration, showing the center span collapsing, was published in an unidentified newspaper in November, 1881, and was accompanied by an angry editorial calling for the building of stronger, safer bridges over the Schuylkill River.
