Illustration showing Japanese dignitaries being greeted on their arrival in Philadelphia by Mayor Alexander Henry and Council members. They arrived at the depot of the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad at Broad Street and Washington Avenue on June 10th. 1860. The occasion marked one stop on a nationwide tour by the first Japanese diplomatic mission to the United States. It was during their stay in Philadelphia that the first recorded game of Japanese chess, called Shogi, was played in the United States.

Written in pencil bottom right is the date June 1860.
