The Oxford Light Infantry was a regiment of the British Army that saw action in the American War of Independence. The soldier's uniform is carefully described, from the helmet plume to the arrangement of buttons and the decoration on the collar.

A soldier of the State Guards is depicted, holding a bayonetted rifle. The uniform is well described, showing the arrangement of buttons and the decoration of the plumed and tasselled helmet. In the background a group of tents can be seen.
