A newspaper clipping illustrating an article about the American District Telegraph Company which was formed in the 1870's. Seven vignettes show the diversity of services to which the invention of the telegraph was applied when the many independent telegraph and messenger services joined forces to create the American District Telegraph Company.  The services are identified clockwise from upper left: nursing; greetings delivery; errand service; night patroling; fire service and burglar alarm service. The  rondelle in the centre shows a uniformed messenger of ADT running to deliver a telegram. Two other vignettes flank the rondelle. On the left is a depiction of a covered wagon from 1776 with the caption "over the mountains", and on the right is a train of 1876 captioned "60 miles an hour".
