Illustration shows John Wise's ascension in the balloon "Hercules" from Philadelphia, August 16th., 1851.  Mr. Wise was a pioneering balloonist from Lancaster County who completed 462 balloon ascensions in his lifetime. Accompanying him on this flight were his wife and son, Miss E. Denton and W.R. Stockton. The balloon is shown tethered at a height of about one hundred feet. At six-thirty in the afternoon the rope was cut and the flight began. They landed safely about five miles north-east of Camden, New Jersey.  A large crowd is shown in the yard from which the balloon ascended. Others are shown looking out of windows and sitting on rooftops of the surrounding houses.
