En route to his inauguration in New York in 1789 George Washington received an ovation by the citizens of Trenton, New Jersey. A Triumphal Arch of flowers was built over the bridge at Assumpink Creek, the place where Washington had defeated the British.

Item pdcc00144, bottom right [image dimensions 11.5 cm x 8.5 cm]:

Reproduction of an etching showing a nineteenth century letter carrier collecting mail from a street mailbox attached to a lamppost. The mailman is wearing a uniform which includes a hat with badge, and a satchel is slung over his shoulder. The words "Chestnut St." are inscribed on the side of the glass case containing the lamp.
