Notes:
Item 1, right (or top, if turned): Drawing by Frank H. Taylor, of a gated entrance to the guard house of the original United States Naval Shipyard, at S. Front & Federal Streets. Except for the military presence and American flag at the entrance, this otherwise typical street view in South Philadelphia gives little indication that an active shipyard on the Delaware River is on the other side of the stone walls. Reproduction of a c.1860s Frank H. Taylor illustration, for an unidentifed publication; 26 x 18 cm, undated.
Item 2, left (or bottom, if turned): As described in this brief text, the Navy Yard was the first US naval shipyard in the country, established in 1800, and active until it was relocated further south in 1875 to League Island, where the Schuylkill River meets the Delaware River. Text for an unidentified publication, 13 x 5.5 cm, undated.
