Historic Street Address:
Smith's Island, in 1869
Media Type: Scrapbooks
Source: Print and Picture Collection
Notes:
Item 1, entire page: In 1838, Windmill Island was split in two by a canal, to provide a direct ferry route between Philadelphia and Camden, NJ, thus creating the smaller Smith's Island. Both islands were developed for recreational and commercial uses, but they were ultimately removed by dredging, beginning in 1891, to facilitate use of the harbor for the growing shipping industry on the Delaware River. This 1869 photograph shows glimpses of the summer resort developed on Smith's Island, with Smith's Hotel (center, partially hidden by trees), an entrance to the bathhouses, and other recreational offerings. Albumen photgraphic print, 33 x 23 cm, 1869.
