Notes:
Item 1, top: Atmospheric lithograph of a sunrise or sunset over Smith's Island, on the Delaware River. A solitary rowboat is seen in the sunlight's reflection on the water. In 1838, a canal was dug through Windmill Island, to provide a direct ferry route between Philadelphia and Camden, NJ. This resulted in the creation of the smaller Smith's Island. There is a caption in pencil at the bottom edge of the image, which may have given the work's title and/or artist's name, but it is unreadable. Lithograph by an unidentified artist, 20 x 11.5 cm, 1848.
Item 2, bottom: Photograph of Smith's Island (left) and Windmill Island (right), in 1890. Originally one island, Windmill Island was split in two by a canal in 1838, creating Smith's Island. The islands were developed for recreational and commercial uses, and the canal provided a direct ferry route between Philadelphia and Camden, NJ. But both islands were eventually removed by dredging, beginning in 1891, to facilitate use of the harbor for the growing shipping industry on the Delaware River. This photograph shows the last year of boating activities to and around the islands. Reproduction of a photograph by Frederick Gutekunst, for an unidentified publication, 19.5 x 13.5 cm, 1890.
