Notes:

Item 1, top:  Stereographic photograph, or stereograph, of a scene at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, c. 1850.  As cities grew in size in the 19th century, Philadelphia's dependence on animal labor necessitated passing new ordinances for managing its horse population.  Horses that were considered unfit, ill, or too old for public uses, were sold rather than euthanized.  This stereograph records the first sale in Philadelphia of its condemned horses, held at the Navy Yard.  Stereograph, 17 x 9 cm, undated (but c. 1850).

Item 2, bottom:  Image of the Washington Cotton Mills, which began operation in 1845, and resulted in a steady period of growth and prosperity for Gloucester, NJ.  The lithograph depicts the mills, viewed from the Delaware River.  It features varied watercrafts at the busy port-- a paddle steamer on the right, schooners on the left, a few sailboats, and a longboat in the foreground.  The extensive mill facilities are pictured along the shore, in the background.  Lithograph by P. S. Duval & Co., 60 x 18.5 cm, undated (but c. 1855).
