Notes:
Two images of the Port Richmond Coal Wharves on the Delaware River, which operated from 1841 until c. 1960s.
Item 1, top: Although the year 1853 appears at the lower right corner of this image, the scene depicted seems to be of the earliest years of the coal wharves at Port Richmond, c. 1841. The absence of steamships and coal chutes, the simple piers, the wagons and wheelbarrows for loading the coal onto schooners--all suggest a time before these wharves were expanded and built up in the 1850s, becoming the major coal terminus and depot of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad's operations (see below, in Item 2). Engraving by artist Alfred Rudolph Waud, for an unidentified publication, 24 x 17 cm, 1853.
Item 2, bottom: Image of the busy Port Richmond Coal Wharves of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad, c. early 1850s. A steamer--or collier, in this case--is featured prominently in the foreground, alongside a substantial wharf that supports two coal-bearing trains. Coal is being loaded onto the ship from the railroad cars, via chutes. This activity is mirrored in the distant background, at the P&R RR's numerous other coal terminals lining the Delaware River. Engraving for an unidentified publication, 15 x 7.5 cm, c. early 1850s.
